Blackburn on Democrat Budget: "They Want To Tax Too Much So They Can Spend Too Much"

House Democrats today released their fiscally irresponsible budget for 2009. Their proposal features the largest tax increase in American history and unrestrained new spending while abdicating entirely any responsibility to deal with the looming entitlement crisis. Reacting to the audacious proposal, Congressman Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) made the following remarks:

"This budget makes Democrat motives clear, they want to tax too much so they can spend too much. I am dismayed that as it gets harder and harder for Tennessee families to heat their homes, fill up the car, and pay their house note, Democrats propose a $600 billion tax hike, add more than $200 billion in spending, and saddle our children with more than $600 billion in additional debt."

More on the Democrat Budget:

* The Democrat budget includes the largest tax increase in history; raising taxes by $683 billion over 5 years including higher taxes on marriage and children, investments, small businesses, and estates.

* The proposal adds $276 billion to the President's budget over 5 years. With more than $3 trillion in annual spending, the Democrat budget increases discretionary spending above the President's budget by $22 billion in 2009 and $276 billion over the five year period.

* The Democrat budget does not address the solvency of Medicare and Social Security. Under the current proposal, unfunded liabilities will grow to roughly $52.5 trillion.

* The Democrat budget raises this year's debt by $646 billion.
