Issue Position: Housing
From suburbs to cities, Americans living in communities of all sizes need greater access to more affordable housing. To address this challenge, Senator Reed led a successful effort to preserve the low-income housing tax credit (LIHTC), a program that has helped construct affordable housing for over 3.5 million Americans. As a senior member of the Banking Committee, which oversees federal housing initiatives, Senator Reed also supports a plan to allow Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, two congressionally chartered, shareholder-owned companies that are the nation's largest suppliers of home mortgage money, to establish an affordable housing fund. This fund would supply as much as $350 to $800 million per year in grants for bricks and mortar housing development for low-income families. And to help reduce homelessness nationwide, Senator Reed's bipartisan Community Partnership to End Homelessness Act and Services to End Long-Term Homelessness Act would provide cities and towns with tools they need to place homeless individuals and families into permanent housing.
