Rep. Courtney Questions Asst. Secretary of the Navy B.J. Penn about Future of Subase

Today Congressman Joe Courtney welcomed the testimony of Assistant Secretary of the Navy B.J. Penn, who asserted that Subase New London is an important part of the Department of Defense's plan for the future.

There are significant funds currently programmed for Sub Base between 2009 and 2013 - nearly $104 million over the next 5 years, representing an increase of $38 million from the FY2008 long term investment plan.

Congressman Courtney sought to clarify the Navy's view of Subase New London in light of the significant investment.

"The Navy's intention to invest over $100 million in major improvements to Subase New London over the next five years means that they are committed to keeping the submarine base in southeastern Connecticut for the foreseeable future," stated Congressman Courtney. "I appreciate Assistant Secretary Penn's honest exchange and for sharing my opinion that Subase New London is a vital component to our nation's long term security."
