Cornyn Voices Support For Trinity River Project At Annual Dallas Luncheon
Also addresses Big Brothers Big Sisters North Texas Open House in Irving
U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, made the following statement Tuesday after delivering remarks at the Annual Trinity Commons Luncheon, a gathering of all the partners involved in the Trinity River Project in Dallas, which include elected officials from local, state and federal government, corporate partners, and private citizens who share the common goal of completing the Trinity River Project:
"The Trinity River project is the result of years of thoughtful planning and careful collaboration between private citizens and government officials. The project's timely completion would yield several important benefits for the region, including flood protection, an increase in badly-needed useable park space and relief from traffic congestion increasingly plaguing one of the fastest-growing urban areas in the country.
"It was encouraging to hear about the progress on this worthwhile project at today's luncheon. The Trinity River plan will help foster continued growth in Dallas, and I'm hopeful it will continue to garner public support so it can move forward in a timely manner."
Also on Tuesday, Sen. Cornyn, honorary chair of the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Texas (BBBS), spoke at the open house for the organization's new location in Irving:
"For more than 100 years, the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization has made a positive difference in the lives of countless of our nation's children. I'm proud to say that Irving, Texas is now home to the nation's largest Big Brothers Big Sisters chapter. I commend the men and women who have invested their resources and time to making this the successful organization it is today. Thanks to their hard work, thousands of children have and will continue to benefit from the valuable mentoring and caring support system Big Brothers Big Sisters North Texas provides."
BBBS North Texas, created in 2003, is the largest BBBS agency in the nation, mentoring more than 6,000 children in 25 North Texas counties.
Today's open house, hosted by the Irving-Las Colinas Chamber of Commerce, served as an official welcoming of the BBBS North Texas to its new location in Irving. Among other local leaders who attended were Irving Mayor Herbert Gears and Irving Independent School District Superintendent Jack Singley.
