Cornyn Calls For Action On Bipartisan Economic Stimulus Legislation

U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, a member of the Senate Budget Committee, made the following statement this evening regarding ongoing efforts in the Senate to pass an economic stimulus bill:
"In these uncertain economic times, members of the United States Senate have a responsibility to work together and pass legislation that will help working families and stimulate the economy. Last week, the House passed an economic stimulus package with bipartisan supportin fact 385 members supported legislation that was worked out between the Democratic Speaker of the House and the President.
"While I have concerns with certain aspects of the House-passed legislation, I also recognize it represents a compromise that will ultimately help working families and get our economy back on its feet.
"I simply cannot understand why the Democratic leadership in the Senate is now delaying this critical legislation from being signed into law by moving away from that bipartisan agreement and adding extraneous provisions that will do nothing to stimulate the economy. These will only add to the costs we are asking our children and grandchildren to pay for in the future.
"It's my hope that my colleagues in the other party will stop playing politics and work with Senate Republicans to pass an economic stimulus bill this week. The time to act is now."
