Smith Comments on State of the Union Address

Congressman Adrian Smith (R-NE) today released the following statement following President Bush's State of the Union Address.

"This was an important speech not only for President Bush, but also for our entire country. The issues he highlighted need to be addressed and in the right way. We need to move quickly on an economic stimulus package and a permanent update to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, which expires Friday.

"I agree action must be taken to rein in earmarks, and the President's recent declaration to federal agencies to ignore earmarks not voted on by Congress is wholly appropriate. The process is at the point of fundamental reform, and I'm glad President Bush outlined this to the American people.

"I had hoped the President would address the pressing need for a workable Farm Bill, and to call on Congress to work together to pass a bill which is such an important issue for rural Americans.

"There is a lot of work to do, both by the Administration and by Congress. It is my sincere hope we can get to work in a bipartisan, pragmatic fashion," Smith said.
