Rep. Johnson's Statement on the President's 2008 State of the Union Address

The President's 2008 State of the Union address was, at best, a good attempt to spin a bad story.

* Mr. Bush says he wants to keep the economy healthy though we can clearly see he has led it into a nose dive.
* Mr. Bush says he wants to create jobs through free trade agreements, but workers know that their U.S. jobs are being exported.
* Mr. Bush says he wants to stop wasteful spending but he is sinking $10 billion every month into Iraq.
* Mr. Bush says there has been progress with the war but our troops are no closer to coming home.
* Mr. Bush says he cares about America's children, but he has twice vetoed bipartisan legislation for the state children's health insurance program - putting 10 million of our children at risk.

Mr. Bush talks about showing compassion yet he refuses to see the devastation caused when families lose their homes, when the sick have no healthcare, when hospitals close, when our school systems fail, and when our nation's infrastructure crumbles. The President's priorities are off base, his policies are suspect, and his politics are oftentimes unconscionable.

But even in the face of all this, the Democratic Congress still stands ready to help the Administration find effective solutions to our national challenges.
