Capito Reacts to State of the Union

Congresswoman Says Continued Bipartisanship Should Be Goal for the Coming Year in Congress

Rep. Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) issued the following statement this evening in response to the President's State of the Union Address:

"Central to the President's message tonight was a call for bipartisanship on the important issues of the day, and I couldn't agree more. West Virginians aren't looking for political posturing and partisan games. They're looking for results.

"I've been particularly encouraged by the agreement between House leaders and the President on a plan to stimulate our slowing economy. Clearly the stimulus package is a work in progress and must pass both chambers of Congress, but it is obvious that we're starting from a strong framework of bipartisan cooperation that emphasizes support for low and middle income West Virginians.

"It is also clear from tonight's address that the President understands the important promise of clean coal as we seek energy independence and a reprieve from the high-cost of energy. Coal presents an opportunity to invest in domestic sources of energy and reduce our dependence on foreign oil.

"As the President laid out a series of initiatives tonight - ranging from earmark reform, to education and national security - a common theme was his call for unity from members of both political parties as we address these issues. I echo the President's call for cooperation and encourage my colleagues to push for pragmatic, bipartisan solutions. The civil compromise currently underway about the economy doesn't have to be a short-term affair."
