Governor Kaine Sets Special Election Date for 99th House of Delegates District
- Some voters may use paper ballots -

Governor Timothy M. Kaine today set Tuesday, February 19, 2008, as the date for voters in the 99th House of Delegates District to participate in a special election to select a successor to former Delegate Robert J. Wittman. Delegate Wittman resigned from the House of Delegates after being elected to serve the unexpired term of the late U.S. Representative Jo Ann Davis, representing Virginia's 1st Congressional District.

"It is important that we have a delegate in place as soon as possible during the session commencing in January 2008," Governor Kaine said. "Holding the special election on February 19th will provide a new delegate with the opportunity to participate meaningfully in the legislative session and to commence important constituent services promptly."

Specifically, state law prohibits special elections 60 days prior to the primaries to be held on February 12, 2008. Therefore, the special election for the 99th District will occur on the first available Tuesday after those primaries.

Most jurisdictions in the 99th District will be able to use electronic voting machines. However, in any jurisdictions where voting machines will not be available immediately after the February primaries, voters will cast paper ballots.

The 99th House District is comprised of all of King George, Lancaster, Northumberland, Richmond, and Westmoreland Counties; and part of Caroline County comprised of the Bowling Green and Port Royal Precincts and parts of the Mattaponi and Woodford Precincts.
