Statement of the Governor and US Secretary of Transportation

Governor Timothy M. Kaine and US DOT Secretary of Transportation Mary Peters today released the following statements about the Virginia Department of Transportation's announcement regarding the Capital Beltway High Occupancy Toll (HOT) Lanes project.

"Addressing congestion with new solutions is critical to our economic well-being and quality of life. With this agreement, the Department of Transportation and their private and federal partners are addressing congestion on Virginia's busiest highway. Less than a year ago, working with the General Assembly, funding was committed to this project to help make it a reality. Our public-private partnership programs continue to demonstrate that we can meet the demands of our residents, visitors and businesses. By working together, we can manage congestion and provide new travel options for residents and businesses of Northern Virginia." - Governor Timothy M. Kaine

"By embracing the powerful mix of technology and private sector resources and expertise, thousands of drivers currently stuck in traffic every day will enjoy the freedom of free-flowing lanes on one of the nation's most congested highways." - U.S. Secretary of Transportation Mary E. Peters
