Statement on Hate Crimes

"The decision to preemptively remove the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Act language from the Department of Defense Authorization bill during conference is deeply disappointing.

Strengthening our nation's laws against hate crimes is long overdue and both houses of Congress have cast strong bipartisan votes to do just that.

The best prospect for overcoming or circumventing the President's veto threat against the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Act is to send it to him as part of a bill he will sign. It is unfortunate that Congress failed to call his bluff."
