Capito on S-MINER: Safety First
Congresswoman Says Mine Safety Bill Stands to Build on Ongoing Health and Safety Efforts
Rep. Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) issued the following statement today after voting to support the Supplemental Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2008 (S-MINER Act):
"Coal mining has a strong tradition in West Virginia and our miners deserve - and should expect - safe and healthy working conditions. Unfortunately, recent mining tragedies have highlighted the ongoing battle to close safety gaps and rectify deficiencies in mine safety.
"In response to these disasters - including the tragedy at Sago Mine - we passed the MINER Act of 2006 to address mine safety and tackle challenges that put our miners in danger. Since enacting the MINER Act, mine safety regulations have been substantially tightened at both the state and federal level, while the mining industry continues to undertake changes and safety improvements mandated by this bipartisan piece of legislation.
"Any tragedy reminds us that our efforts to promote mine safety are far from over. It is important, however, that in our efforts to improve safety we do not lose sight of ongoing progress. We must be cautious that new regulations do not jeopardize job security for our miners or undermine safety efforts already underway.
"I look forward to working with my colleagues in both the House and the Senate to improve mine safety as this legislation moves forward."
