Chairman Thompson Responds to Secretary Chertoff's List of Accomplishments: Says More Must Be Done

Today, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff held a press conference to list his Department's accomplishments for 2007. In response, Congressman Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security, issued the following statement:

"For an agency still in its infancy, DHS' employees have a great deal to be proud of. Many work behind the scenes to protect our communities from unimaginable threats. However, DHS' potential can only be realized through strong leadership, oversight, accountability, and a willingness to admit when it misses the mark, not just when it meets it. As this Administration winds down, it's vital that Secretary Chertoff complete the ‘To-Do' list that I gave him. Until the To-Do list is checked off, the nation will not be as secure as it must be," said Chairman Thompson.
