Reed Statement on the Defeat of the Gun Industry Immunity Bill

Date: March 2, 2004
Issues: Guns

U.S. Senator Jack Reed (D-RI), the Democratic manager of the bill, stated:

" Today, victims of gun violence and their families won an enormous victory that will protect their right to seek justice in the wake of tragedy. The failure of the bill to grant special protections and immunity to the gun industry is a message to the gun lobby and the Republican leadership: American families are more concerned about keeping guns out of the hands of children, criminals and terrorists and ensuring the rights of victims than they are about granting immunity to a special interest.

The bi-partisan support for amendments to close the gunshow loophole, extend the assault weapons ban and include child safety locks on guns reflects the nation's and the Senate's support for common sense gun safety measures."
