Wittman Is Promised Support For House Armed Services Committee

Rep. John Boehner, Republican leader in the U.S. House of Representatives, Wednesday (Nov. 28) pledged his "full support" for assigning Del. Rob Wittman to the House Armed Services Committee when he wins the Dec. 11 special election in Virginia's 1st Congressional District.

"Rob Wittman has my full support for a seat on the House Armed Services Committee," Boehner (R., Ohio) said in a statement issued by the Washington, D.C., Communications Division of the National Republican Congressional Committee. [Note: See Statement Here]

"Representation on the Armed Services Committee is important for the troops and military families in Virginia's First Congressional District, and I look forward to working with Rob, the Republican leadership, and the Members of the Steering Committee to make this happen at the earliest possible opportunity."

Wittman (R., Westmoreland County), attending a "meet and greet" luncheon sponsored by the Middlesex County Republican Committee, said he is delighted with Congressman Boehner's promise and looks forward to the Armed Services Committee assignment.

"In my legislative district," Wittman said, "there are two very important military installations - Naval Support Facility Dahlgren and Fort AP Hill, and I work very closely with their commanders and staff. Last year, I obtained $3 million in the Virginia budget for an education center for Virginia universities to provide advanced degrees in science and engineering for folks at Dahlgren and in the Washington, D.C., area."

Boehner noted that the 1st District also includes Quantico Marine Corps Base and the Naval Weapons Station along the York River, and that nearly 18 percent of the people living in District are military veterans.

It has been customary on Capitol Hill for the 1st District's House members to serve on the Armed Services Committee. Most recently, they have been the late Rep. Jo Ann Davis (R.), the late Herbert Bateman (R.), Paul S. Trible (R.), who later was elected to the U.S. Senate and now is president of Christopher Newport University in Newport News.

Wittman is the GOP candidate to fill the unexpired term of Congresswoman Davis, who died Oct. 6 after a two-year battle with lung cancer. The 1st District stretches from Northern Virginia southward to Hampton Roads.
