Gov. Rounds asks Thanksgiving Holiday Drivers to Keep Safety a Priority

Gov. Mike Rounds is asking South Dakotans to keep their minds off turkey and on the road as they head out for the Thanksgiving holiday.

"It's easy to get caught up in the holiday season, but we can't lose sight of responsible driving," said Gov. Rounds. "It's more important to get to Thanksgiving dinner safely than to get to Thanksgiving dinner quickly."

Gov. Rounds is reminding travelers of the following travel safety tips:

* Speeding reduces your reaction time and increases your risk of being involved in a crash. Please abide by the posted speed limits.

* More than 70% of South Dakotans buckle up. You should too!

* Drinking and driving is against the law. If you're going to drink, find yourself a sober driver.

* If traveling in winter weather conditions, have a winter car survival kit and let friends and family know your travel schedule and route.

Last year during the Thanksgiving holiday, there were 268 crashes in South Dakota. Those crashes killed two people and injured another 82.
