Delegate Rob Wittman Announces Intent To Seek Republican Nomination For First Congressional District House Seat
Delegate Rob Wittman, (R. -99th) today announced his intention to seek the Republican nomination for the First Congressional District House seat left vacant by the passing of former U.S. Congresswoman Jo Ann Davis.
Wittman is a member of the Virginia House of Delegates, having been elected to that office in 2005 to represent the 99th District--The Northern Neck. He formerly served as a member and chairman of the Westmoreland County Board of Supervisors, Mayor of the town of Montross, and as a member of the Montross Town Council. The Governor will set a date for a special election and the First District Republican Committee will determine the method of nomination--most likely by convention.
In making his announcement, Delegate Wittman expressed deep regret at the loss of Congresswoman Davis and sympathy for her family. He also expressed his gratitude to the voters of the 99th District who have supported him and to the many who have called on him to offer his service for the good of the First Congressional District.
Delegate Wittman said:
"I would like to express deep regret for the difficult times that we in America's First District are experiencing. Because we are going through these hard times we must make many hard decisions."
"I have been in close contact with family, friends, and supporters these past two weeks and together we have made the decision that I should become a candidate for the Republican nomination to fill the vacancy left by Congresswoman Jo Ann Davis in the U.S. House of Representatives."
"I sincerely hope that Republicans throughout the First District will choose me to fill this vacancy. I believe that my dedication to my district, my service in both local and state elected office, and my reputation as a fair and thoughtful legislator will persuade the voters of this congressional district to send me to Washington. If they do, I pledge to serve them faithfully."
"I am still seeking re-election to the Virginia House of Delegates this year and should I be elected to Congress I will step down and work with the Republican leadership to seek a qualified candidate."
"I have been very fortunate over the past few years to have the support of so many great folks in the 99th House of Delegates District and I hope that their support will continue as I offer myself as a candidate for the Republican nomination for the First District House of Representatives."
