Capito Statement on House Iraq Vote

Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) today made the following statement after voting against another politically-motivated resolution on Iraq:

"This is yet another politically motivated resolution by the Majority that would undercut the decision-making power of commanders on the ground in Iraq," said Capito. "This political stunt on Iraq is the 41st of the year and - if it's at all like the first 40 - it will fail to become law. We must pass a clean troop funding bill that will receive true bipartisan support, instead of trying to make political hay with a bill that under funds our troops.

"In recent months we've seen hopeful signs of progress on security and localized political reconciliation in Iraq. We want Iraqis to take control and we must continue to apply pressure to Iraq's national leaders, but now is not the time to pull the rug out from under our troops who are performing admirably and achieving results.

"We all want our troops to come home - and some have started to come home - but it would be reckless to sacrifice the progress we've made by irresponsibly short-funding them. With some troops already on the way home, this resolution is obvious political grandstanding."
