Gillibrand Sends Bill to President to Keep Internet Access Tax-Free

Today, local Congresswoman Kirsten Gillibrand voted in favor of legislation which would keep the internet tax-free. The legislation, S.Amnd. 3466, is the Senate version of H.R. 3678, which the Congresswoman supported two weeks ago. The legislation amends the Internet Tax Freedom Act, which prohibits the ability to tax access to the internet and is set to expire at the end of this month.

"This legislation will help ensure for the next seven years that consumers will have access to high-speed internet in underserved areas. It will also protect families and small businesses from paying onerous taxes and fees," said Congresswoman Gillibrand, who founded the Congressional High Tech Caucus. "The expansion of broadband services into our rural communities is a priority of mine and will help attract good paying jobs to the region. I look forward to having the President sign this legislation into law."

The Congresswoman is also a co-sponsor of H.R 743, legislation that would make the internet tax moratorium permanent.

The Internet Tax Freedom Act, was first passed in 1998, and has since been twice extended. In her first term of Congress, Congresswoman Gillibrand has sponsored several tax cut measures targeted towards New York's Upstate and North Country families.
