Gillibrand Votes to Support Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area

Today, local Congresswoman Kirsten Gillibrand voted in support of H.R. 1483, a bipartisan bill to reauthorize the National Heritage Area Act of 1996. This legislation extends the authorization for the Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area through 2027, and increases funding for the heritage areas from $10 to $20 million.

"The Hudson River Valley is central to America's rich history," said Congresswoman Gillibrand, a Member of the House Armed Services Committee. "This funding will not only help preserve our historic sites for future generations, but also strengthen local economies through increased tourism."

The Congresswoman, a Member of Historic Preservation Caucus recently authored H.R. 3063, the Martin Van Buren Boundary Line Revision Act, which would extend the boundary at the Martin Van Buren Historic Site located in Kinderhook, NY to help preserve the landscape and provide additional lands for public recreation. This legislation is supported by local and county governments, tourism and business organizations.

In July, the Congresswoman announced that the Rensselaer County Historic Preservation Committee was awarded $23,075 from the National Park Service and the Preserve America Grant program to promote the county's rich historic and cultural resources.

The Hudson River Valley Heritage Area stretches from the New York City suburbs up to northern Rensselaer County. The area includes important 20th District historic sites such as the homes of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt in Hyde Park, the Shaker Museum and Library in Old Chatham, and the American Museum of Firefighting in Hudson.
