Gillibrand to Meet with Local Firefighters to Announce Serve Act and Hold Congress At Your Corner in Queensbury SERVE ACT Gives Volunteer Firefighter and EMTs a $1,000 Tax Credit
Today, local Congresswoman Kirsten Gillibrand announced that she will be holding Congress At Your Corner in Warren County this Saturday, October 27th, from 2:30pm to 3:30pm at the Binley Florist and Garden Center located at the corner of Dix Ave and Quaker Roads in Queensbury.
Earlier in the day, the Congresswoman will be stopping at the Queensbury Central Fire House at 1:30pm to announce her co-sponsorship of the 2007 SERVE ACT which responds to the recruitment issues of volunteer firefighters in local communities. The bill would provide a $1,000 tax credit; and can serve as an important recruitment tool for local groups to boost enrollment numbers. Queensbury Town Supervisor, Dan Stec, as well as local volunteer firefighters and EMTs will also be on hand to discuss the need for this important legislation.
Local kids will also have the opportunity to learn and participate in a Smoke Trailer. The trailer is laid out to resemble a small apartment; the Safety Trailer then uses a Non-toxic, vegetable oil-based theatrical smoke which is used inside to create a real-life scenario for young children. Compliments of the West Glens Falls Fire Department, the trailer's primary purpose is to teach people what to do if they are caught in a fire.
"Our brave first responders provide critical services for the safety and security of our local communities," said Congresswoman Gillibrand, a Member of the House Armed Services Committee. "It is my hope that these funds will encourage more people in the community to serve as Volunteer Firefighters and reward our firefighters who presently serve their local communities so courageously." Congresswoman Gillibrand continued, "The Federal government can contribute and help reverse this trend of declining volunteers by encouraging such courageous service. Recruitment goals can be met if there are incentives to get people to join into the voluntary fire and emergency services. The Serve Act is just a small incentive and thank-you for their admirable service to their community."

About Congress At Your Corner : Congresswoman Kirsten Gillibrand (NY-20) created a Congress At Your Corner program as part of her ambitious constituent outreach efforts. The program is designed to take her office out into the communities she serves in order to hear from constituents so that she may better represent the families of the twentieth district.
"Accountability and accessibility to the families of our district is very important to being an effective Representative and I am committed to both," said Representative Gillibrand. "Instead of asking folks to come to my office I want to go to them and make it convenient for them to see their Member of Congress."
Throughout the year Congresswoman Gillibrand will have scheduled public appearances in communities throughout the district. The Congresswoman will have congressional staff with her and be available to discuss issues with people what is on the minds, listen to their opinions and even open case files to help them with problems they may be having with a federal agency.
