Durbin Welcomes Oak Park Officials as Special Guests to the Joint Session of Congress
U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) today welcomed Oak Park Village President David Pope and Village Trustee Ray Johnson as his guests to an address given by the President of France, Nicolas Sarkozy, to a special joint session of Congress.
Before attending the joint session, Durbin met with Pope, Johnson and Village Manager Tom Barwin in his Capitol office to discuss transportation and development issues in Oak Park particularly the cap over a portion of I-290 that splits Oak Park. The cap would provide space to build parks above the highway and likely reduce the amount of pollution that would come from the increased traffic after the Illinois Department of Transportation completes the expansion of I-290. Senator Durbin secured $2 million in funding for the project in the most recent Transportation Appropriations bill.
