Gov. Rounds announces $1.2 million in preparedness grants for health care

PIERRE, S.D. - Gov. Mike Rounds announced today that the state has approved $1,219,495 in grants to help hospitals and clinics continue disaster preparedness efforts.

Since 2004, the state has awarded hospitals and rural health clinics more than $4.7 million dollars for such preparedness efforts as isolation and decontamination equipment, pharmaceutical stockpiles, and exercises and drills. All hospitals are eligible for the funding as well as 27 rural health clinics and community health centers that are either geographically distant from a hospital or serve a distinct population.

"We recognize that the real response to any disaster begins at the local level," said Gov. Rounds. "We're pleased that we can provide these dollars to local health care providers across the state so they can strengthen their disaster preparations."

The funding comes to the state Department of Health from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of the Assistant Secretary of Preparedness and Response. The grant dollars are intended to increase the capacity of health care facilities to respond to any disaster with mass casualties.

The grants include $569,800 for developing and exercising disaster plans in coordination with other responders. The remaining $640,695 of the grant award covers basic lifesaving equipment, supplies and durable medical equipment that the facilities have identified as needs during drills and exercises in previous grant years.
