Durbin Statement on Reports that CPSC Traveled on Industry's Dime
United States Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) released the following statement in response to a report in today's Washington Post that senior officials at the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) took trips paid for by the industries they are charged with regulating:
"Commissioner Nord has to account to Congress and the American people as to why she participated in so many trips paid for by the very industries she is charged with regulating."
"At a time when Americans are counting on their government to keep their families and children safe, Ms. Nord's conduct raises serious questions about her commitment to the fundamental mission of the Consumer Product Safety Commission."
"As the CPSC reform bill goes to the floor, I plan to introduce an amendment based on provisions that govern the conduct of commissioners at the FCC and SEC. Regulators should not and must not accept travel from those they regulate - period."
