Walz Supports Expansion of Assistance for Workers Displaced by Trade

Washington, Oct 31 - Congressman Tim Walz today voted in favor of H.R. 3920, the Trade and Globalization Assistance Act of 2007. Walz said that the landmark legislation will overhaul the current Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) program to better meet the needs of American workers negatively impacted by globalization.

"This bill is one of the first steps by Congress to create a new, fair and effective trade policy that stands up for U.S. businesses and workers in the global marketplace," said Walz. "The current Trade Adjustment Assistance criteria are immensely outdated and as a result, it has become extremely difficult for workers affected by globalization to get assistance through this program. This bill will correct that problem. "

Walz said that the legislation will expand TAA coverage to more workers, including service workers; expand the program's training opportunities by increasing the current funding cap and reform the Health Coverage Tax Credit provision of TAA. The bill also creates new benefits and tax incentives for industries and communities that have been hit hard by trade.
