Rep. Lofgren Votes to Override President's SCHIP Veto

Bill Would Have Expanded Access to Health Insurance for Needy Children

Washington, D.C. - Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-San Jose) today voted to override the President's veto of the bipartisan Children's Health Insurance bill, which would have provided health care coverage for 10 million children.

"I'm deeply saddened that Republicans in the House ignored the needs of America's families" stated Rep. Zoe Lofgren. "Despite the request of our Governor, California's Republican Members of Congress put their party ahead of our state's children and voted against overriding the veto. In California alone over 1.8 million children would have been eligible for coverage under this bill, and in the 16th Congressional District we currently have over 13,000 children enrolled in the program. While the veto override vote has failed, the fight to insure children will go forward. I will continue working with my colleagues in both houses to pass a bill that expands access to the Children's Health Insurance Program."
