Statement of Senator Durbin on Executive Order Increasing Sanctions in Burma

United States Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) released the following statement today, after President Bush announced an increase in sanctions against the ruling military junta in Burma.

"I'm pleased with the President's announcement today and urge Congress to do what we can to support greater economic sanctions against the brutal dictatorship in Burma."

"Global condemnation of Burma has been loud and swift. No nation on earth should support or protect such a regime. "

"The circumstances in Burma couldn't be more compelling: A Nobel Peace Prize winner has been held under house arrest for 12 of the last 18 years; a brutal and corrupt military government is pillaging the country's economic wealth ; and repeated attempts by the people through elections and peaceful demonstrations to bring about democratic change are extinguished."

"The dramatic images being shown on television and on the front pages of newspapers around the world show the bravery and dignity of these peaceful protesters. To the people of Burma: We are with you. "

Recently Senator Durbin met with the Chinese Ambassador regarding the situation in Burma. The Senator discussed the need for China in particular to play a more constructive role in ending the violence and pushing for democratic change.

Senator Durbin is the Chairman of the first Congressional committee dealing solely with the issue of human rights. He is an outspoken leader in the Senate on some of the most egregious violations of human rights in the world. His committee has held hearings on the genocide in Darfur, child soldiers, human trafficking and the material support bar.
