Durbin Commends Decision to Suspend Doctor's License

U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) today made the following statement on the decision by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) to suspend the license of Dr. Jose Veizaga-Mendez who is being investigated in connection with a string of deaths at a VA hospital in Marion, IL.

"Just as Dr. Veizaga-Mendez is entitled to a fair hearing, the patients being treated in Illinois are entitled to peace of mind," said Durbin. "The Department took the right action in suspending his license as the investigation into the deaths at the Marion VA Medical Center continues.

"I will continue to work with Senator Obama and the VA to determine what went wrong at the Marion VA facility and how it can be prevented in the future."

Yesterday, Durbin and Senator Barack Obama (D-IL) sent a letter to the Secretary of the IDFPR, Dean Martinez expressing their concerns with Dr. Veizaga-Mendez practicing in the state of Illinois. They asked to be informed of the status of Dr. Veizaga-Mendez's license to practice medicine in Illinois and the steps that IDFPR plans to take to ensure that no further Illinois patients are endangered pending the outcome of the IDFPR's investigation of Dr. Veizaga-Mendez.
