Statement on the President's Veto of the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP)

"The man who coined the phrase ‘No Child Left Behind' abandoned ten million children today with the stroke of his veto pen.

While I'm not surprised by the President's veto, I'm deeply saddened by it.

I'm appalled by the President's lack of compassion for the almost 38,000 children in Wisconsin and millions more around the country who would gain health care coverage under the bill. This veto is another black mark on his already dismal legacy.

It is simply wrong to deny children in this country access to health care because their parents lack insurance or have a low income. The majority of Congress recognizes that. The majority of the American people recognize that. Our efforts in the House will now focus on over-riding this veto and providing children the health care coverage they need and deserve."
