DeLauro: CT Pet Food Recall is a Reminder that Our Food Safety System Still Needs Reform

Washington , D.C. - Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (Conn.-3) issued the following statement regarding the recall of Bravo pet food because of potential contamination with salmonella and listeria monocytogenes.

"The pet food recalls this year are reminders that the FDA needs to implement meaningful reforms of our pet food safety system, in addition to ensuring the safety of human food. This reform should include frequent inspections of pet food manufacturing facilities, routine testing of pet food, and assurances that non-approved substances are not included in pet food.

"However, given that the agency has not asked Congress for greater authorities to protect public health, it would appear that no signs of meaningful reforms from FDA are forthcoming. When industry is attempting to fill the void by starting the dialogue calling for standards and increased regulations, this should send a strong signal to the FDA to act to modernize our food safety system."
