WALBERG STATEMENT ON TESTIMONY OF GENERAL DAVID PETRAEUS, AMBASSADOR RYAN CROCKER

Washington, Sep 10 - U.S. Congressman Tim Walberg (R-MI) today issued the following statement on the testimony of General David Petraeus and Ambassador Ryan Crocker about progress in Iraq. The joint hearing between the House Armed Services and Foreign Affairs Committees was held today on Capitol Hill.

"I had the opportunity to attend today's hearing in which General David Petraeus and Ambassador Ryan Crocker testified to Congress on the situation on the ground in Iraq.

"General Petraeus is a well-respected, trusted military leader confirmed unanimously by the U.S. Senate to lead the 168,000 American soldiers in Iraq, and he provided a credible and unvarnished front line account of the new strategy in Iraq.

"Evidence and analysis reveal the new strategy in Iraq has been successful in reducing violence and bringing greater security to Iraq. Though political progress has been slow, the Iraqis have an opportunity to accomplish much-needed political advancements.

"General Petraeus outlined a plan going forward that I believe will defeat al-Qaeda in Iraq, bring more domestic security, create an environment to secure political progress and bring our troops home after a successful completion of their mission. The performance of our troops has been exceptional, and the gains made by our troops need to be solidified.

"Numerous regions of Iraq that were hotbeds of violence and terrorism months ago are more secure today because of the new strategy and heroic efforts from the men and women in uniform.

"Despite the progress, much uncertainty remains throughout Iraq, especially in the political realm. As Ambassador Crocker stated, the government of Iraq must do more to bring political reconciliation to its nation, and Iraqi forces must assume greater responsibility for the security of their country.

"The report of General Petraeus and Ambassador Crocker gives Congress the opportunity to unite behind General Petraeus' plan and allow the men and women serving in Iraq to return home soon and victoriously so our families will have a more secure future here at home."
