Smith Statement on Deficit Estimate
Congressman Adrian Smith (R-NE) released the following statement regarding today's announcement that the U.S. budget deficit will narrow to $205 billion this year, the lowest since 2002. The deficit has been cut in half the last three years and is at its lowest point in five years.
"The money the government spends does not belong to Congress; it belongs to the taxpayers who earned it. Americans deserve to keep more of their own money to save and invest for the future, and commonsense tax policies help drive a strong and healthy economy. As a result of pro-growth policies, taxpayers have saved money while tax revenues have gone up. Numbers don't lie: this is hard, economic proof that lower tax rates fuel our economy.
"Now is not the time for Congress to be adding more entitlement spending or increasing taxes. Fiscal responsibility, including holding the line on spending, will help continue to lower our nation's deficit," Smith said.
