Hails agreement on heels of visit with Iraqi President

U.S. Representative John Boozman (R-AR) today issued the following statement on the national unity and political reconciliation accord reached by Iraqi Shi'ite, Sunni, and Kurdish political leaders:

"This is an important step forward for the future of Iraq. This is a reward for the hard-fought success that our men and women in uniform have created on the ground, and it is my hope the Iraqi government seizes this opportunity and ratifies this accord for national unity.

Last week, my colleagues and I pressured President (Jalal) Talabani to move forward politically in Iraq. The people of the United States want movement which coincides with our forward movement militarily. This is a sign that the Iraqi leadership is maturing and improving their efforts at representing all of the Iraqi people, and not just their tribes or religious sects.

I am very proud of the efforts of our military in Iraq, which has created the environment where an agreement such as this can be formed. It is now time for the political leaders in Iraq to take the next step, to work together honestly to fill in the details of this accord and deliver to the Iraqi people a plan to move their country to a safer, peaceful, successful future."
