CORNYN RESPONDS TO THE STATE OF THE UNION

Americans are optimistic, and with good reason, Cornyn says

"The State of our Union is confident and strong" - Pres. George W. Bush

WASHINGTON, DC - U.S. Sen. John Cornyn made the following statement Tuesday regarding President Bush's State of the Union address to the Congress: "The President is right: The state of the union is confident and strong. Once again, the President laid out clear, decisive goals for the future of our union, while recognizing the accomplishments of Americans growing the economy, and protecting our nation here and around the world.

"Over the past year, Americans have deposed a brutal tyrant, brought freedom to millions of Iraqis, and continued to fight the war on terror with great success. Americans have secured our homeland and hometowns in the face of violent and constant threats, while reversing a downward economic trend and creating some of the strongest growth in our nation's history. This is possible because Americans are optimistic, resolute and won't shrink from the many challenges we face.
"While partisan candidates are talking down the economy and spreading pessimism, it was encouraging to see the President's message of hope, optimism, and confidence in the American people. I was especially encouraged by the President's commitment to support safe, strong families and his continued efforts to bolster homeland and national security. Promoting tax relief for families, increasing access to health care, and growing jobs are priorities that I am committed to, and that the nation deserves. "I hope the President's speech will serve as a clarion call for this Congress to act, rather than bog down in the hyper-partisan atmosphere of presidential primaries. The Congress should take up the call and continue to provide growth and optimism for the nation." U.S. Sen.
