Sens. Durbin and Casey on Senate Delegation to Iraq, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Jordan

U.S. Senate Assistant Majority Leader Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Sen. Robert Casey (D-PA) will lead an official visit to the Middle East and South Asia. The primary focus of the trip will be military and security issues. The senators will also explore ways the United States can support several developing democracies around the world.

The delegation will be leaving today and traveling through the next week. Due to security concerns, details of the trip will not be released in advance, but Durbin and Casey will travel to Iraq and Jordan, and Durbin will also visit Pakistan and Afghanistan.

"In the coming months, Iraq and the Middle East will be front and center in our national debate. This trip will allow us to meet with the region's leaders and see firsthand our progress," said Durbin. "I am also looking forward to meeting with Illinois servicemen and women who are stationed in the region."

Durbin and Casey will also have a chance to assess the mounting Iraqi refugee crisis that is severely impacting the region; the political progress in Iraq and Afghanistan and the current security situation.
