Speaker Pelosi Reappoints McCollum to National Council for the Arts

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has announced that Congresswoman Betty McCollum (MN-04) will be reappointed to serve on the National Council on the Arts. McCollum was first appointed to the Council, which is the advisory board to the National Endowment for the Arts, in 2002.

Rep. McCollum's appointment is yet another recognition of her long record of strong support for the arts in Minnesota and across America. In March, she was honored with the annual Congressional Arts Leadership Award from Americans for the Arts and the United States Conference of Mayors.

"The American people value the arts, and the cultural and economic contributions that artists make to our communities," McCollum said. "I'm proud to be asked by Speaker Pelosi to continue working as a strong advocate for the arts in Washington."

The National Council on the Arts advises the Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) on agency policies and programs. It reviews and makes recommendations on applications for grants, funding guidelines, and leadership initiatives. Fourteen members of the Council are appointed by the President and approved by the Senate for six-year, staggered terms. Six members of Congress, two appointed by the Speaker of the House, one by the Minority Leader of the House, two by the Majority Leader of the Senate, and one by the Minority Leader of the Senate, serve for two-year terms.
