Durbin Comments on Bipartisan Meeting With BP President

[WASHINGTON, DC] - U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) today made the following statement after a meeting with the Chairman and President of BP America, Bob Malone.

"BP had a wake up call at today's meeting. They now understand that on a bipartisan basis, the congressional delegations around Lake Michigan are determined to protect the lake.

"Lake Michigan is not just another body of water - it is a treasure to be protected. It is a source of drinking water for millions of families. We hope that it is in this spirit that BP will reevaluate their plans and present us with them when we meet again in September.

"We made it very clear that if they don't work to preserve and protect Lake Michigan, they're in for a battle."

Other members of Congress attending today's bipartisan meeting included: Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), Representatives Rahm Emanuel (D-IL), Mark Kirk (R-IL), Dan Lipinski (D-IL), Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), Judy Biggert (R-IL) and Bobby Rush (D-IL).
