Gillibrand Introduces Legislation to Secure Future of Martin Van Buren Homestead
HR: 3063 -- President Van Buren's Homestead Expansion Heritage Act has been introduced by Cong. Gillibrand. This bill allows for adjustment of the boundaries of the Martin Van Buren national historic site, located in Kinderhook, NY.
"I am pleased to support the growth and preservation of President Van Buren's Homestead," Congresswoman Gillibrand said. "This is an important national historical site and with the tremendous advocacy from the community of Kinderhook and Friends of Lindenwald, we can secure its future."
In 2003, The National Park Service undertook a boundary study for Martin Van Buren National Historic Site to evaluate the adequacy of the Site's current boundary and to develop alternative boundary configurations that would better protect the Site's cultural, natural, and scenic resources. In addition, a cultural landscape study completed in 2004 identified 23 landscape characteristics in the proposed adjustment that can be tied back to Van Buren's time at Lindenwald.
"We are delighted to see this finally happen" Tom Neufield, Director of Friends of Lindenwald and longtime volunteer from the Martin Van Buren National Historic Site.
