Federal Disaster Designation Extended for Kansas Counties
Congressman Jerry Moran today announced that the timeline for disaster assistance eligibility for Kansans victimized by severe storms, flooding and tornadoes has been extended from May 18 to June 1. The extension granted by President Bush comes after Moran urged Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) officials to expand the eligibility window.
"Although the weather has not been kind to us this year, Kansans remain resilient and are working hard to rebuild their communities and their lives," Moran said. "The decision to extend the eligibility deadline will allow more people and communities to receive the assistance they need as they work to recover from the brutality of the May storms."
On May 6, President Bush declared a major disaster for the State of Kansas. The initial declaration only made federal funds available for damage that occurred from May 4 to May 18. This extension of the timeline to June 1 makes more communities and projects eligible for Individual and Public Assistance.
Twenty-one Kansas counties are eligible for Individual Assistance, including Barton, Clay, Cloud, Comanche, Dickinson, Edwards, Ellsworth, Kiowa, Leavenworth, Lyon, Osborne, Osage, Ottawa, Phillips, Pratt, Reno, Rice, Riley, Saline, Shawnee and Stafford Counties. This assistance will allow qualified individuals to receive help from federal programs including housing and small business.
State and local units of government in more than thirty Kansas counties are eligible to receive federal funds to repair or replace disaster-damaged public facilities and infrastructure. Counties eligible for Public Assistance include: Barton, Brown, Chase, Cherokee, Clay, Comanche, Dickinson, Doniphan, Douglas, Edwards, Ellsworth, Harper, Jackson, Kingman, Kiowa, Leavenworth, Lincoln, Lyon, Nemaha, Osage, Osborne, Ottawa, Pottawatomie, Pratt, Reno, Rice, Riley, Saline, Shawnee, Stafford, Wabaunsee and Washington Counties.
