MCNERNEY SUPPORTS MEASURE TO EASE PASSPORT BACKLOG
Today, Congressman Jerry McNerney (CA-11) backed legislation to help clear the distressing passport application backlog by supporting the Passport Backlog Reduction Act. The bill, S. 966, passed the House unanimously on a voice vote.
"I've heard from hundreds of travelers who encountered difficulties in acquiring passports and were worried about whether they'd be able to keep their summer travel plans," said Rep. McNerney. "It's been trying and exasperating for passport applicants. This common sense legislation will make it easier for the State Department to process applications and send travelers on their way."
Passport requests skyrocketed following the implementation of a new law requiring Americans traveling by air to Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda to hold a passport. The increase has resulted in significant delays with many waiting months to receive a passport.
The Passport Backlog Reduction Act gives the State Department the authority to hire retired former staffers who are trained and authorized to process passport applications. Current law denies retirement benefits to these retirees if they exceed strict wages earned and hours worked caps. The legislation approved by the House waives these requirements and makes it possible for the retired workers to return to work and help ease the passport shortage.
"I invite any 11th district residents who encounter difficulties in obtaining a passport to contact my Stockton office at 209-476-8552 or my Pleasanton office at 925-737-0727 for assistance," Rep. McNerney said.
Identical legislation already passed the Senate. The bill now goes to the President for his signature.
