Improved Transportation Infrastructure In Sacramento
On Wednesday, the House Appropriations Committee passed the FY 08
Transportation, Housing and Urban Development Appropriations Bill out of Committee. Included in the bill are key provisions that improve Sacramento's transportation system and economic development initiatives.
"I am pleased that this bill addresses the funding needs of the nation while addressing the regional priorities of our citizens," said Rep. Doris Matsui (CA-5). "It is incumbent upon Congress to make the federal government work for the peopleand provide real, effective and economic answers to the challenges our communities are facing." Included in the bill are:
$400,000 Sacramento Intermodal Terminal Facility, track Relocation project, which is a key component to the downtown rail yard redevelopment project.
$6,000,000 South Sacramento Corridor Phase 2 project will extend RT's South Corridor light rail service from its existing terminus at Meadowview Road to Cosumnes River College.
$150,000 Construction of White Rock Community Park community center, City of Rancho Cordova
$350,000 Sacramento Food Bank, Construction of a new facility to house the Sacramento food bank
"When the federal government and local agencies partner together, the citizens of Sacramento reap the benefits. I thank Subcommittee Chairman John Olver for his leadership, and ensuring that the needs of the American people are met," said Matsui.
The bill seeks to keep the nation's transportation systems safe and strong, and ensure that every American has adequate shelter. It invests in transit projects for urban areas while maintaining the highest-possible environmental standard. The bill provides $50.7 billion for fiscal year 2008,
$40.2 billion of which will be invested in improving and maintaining the nation's highways.
"As this bill moves through the legislative process, I will continue to work to preserve the funding that is vital for the safety and security of our citizenry," said Matsui. The Transportation, Housing and Urban Development Appropriations Bill is expected to be considered on the House Floor next week. The Senate is expected to take up their bill in Committee on Thursday, July 12, 2007.
