Statement of the Governor on NVTA's Decision to Fund Regional Transportation Improvements

Governor Timothy M. Kaine issued the following statement following tonight's vote by the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority to enact local revenue enhancements to fund local and regional transportation priorities:

"In March of this year, we met with the local elected leadership of Northern Virginia and listened to their concerns about the need for additional transportation funding. Based on those concerns, we worked with the General Assembly to improve this legislation, making possible this expanded regional funding and giving Northern Virginia officials new tools to address land use and growth issues.

"Tonight's strong vote by members of the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority reflects the bipartisan consensus of this region's leadership to address this longstanding set of transportation challenges.

"I congratulate the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority for taking this significant step towards determining and funding their own set of regional transportation priorities."
