Baldwin Adds Power to Energy Bill
In House Energy and Commerce Committee deliberations, Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin was responsible for several powerful enhancements to the proposed energy independence bill adopted and expected to go to the floor for a vote after the July 4th recess. With bipartisan support, Baldwin successfully added language to improve industrial and home energy efficiency standards, encourage advanced battery and plug-in hybrid programs, minimize exposure to mercury in energy efficient light bulbs, and study the adequacy of railroad transportation for domestically produced renewable fuel. Baldwin's efforts were supported by industry, environmental, and consumer groups.
"This is an arduous process," said Baldwin after 32 hours of subcommittee and full committee debate. "The bill is just a first step toward true energy independence, but I'm pleased that my recommendations will lead us toward that urgent national goal while respecting the needs of consumers, business and industry, and the environment," Baldwin said.
This past April, Baldwin held several round-table discussions with Wisconsin authorities on energy, the environment, and climate change in anticipation of this month's energy bill debate. Input from business and industry, the UW-Madison, consumer, and environmental groups helped inform Baldwin's deliberations on and contributions to the energy bill.
