Cornyn: Fema Decision Good Step For Central, North Texas Flood Recovery

U.S. Sen. John Cornyn made the following statement Saturday regarding the decision by FEMA to amend the Major Disaster Declaration for Texas to treat all flooding since June 16 as a single incident, clearing the way for the state to request that additional counties affected since then be added to the declaration:

"This is a good step forward in providing important federal assistance to additional Central and North Texas counties that were hit hard by flooding in recent weeks. It allows the state to move closer to securing aid for individual and public recovery efforts. We must keep working to make sure all other Texas counties that suffered significant loss and damage receive the support they need.

"I spoke with the head of FEMA on Friday to urge him to correct the treatment of the recent storms in Texas. I'll continue pushing federal officials to expedite the necessary disaster declarations, clear bureaucratic red tape and make appropriate administrative adjustments to provide relief for those in our state who need it most."

Sen. Cornyn traveled to flood damaged areas in Central and North Texas this week to meet with local officials and residents and offer assistance. He continues working with the Texas Congressional delegation to press for federal funding for recovery efforts in a timely manner.

Sen. Cornyn serves on the Armed Services, Judiciary and Budget Committees. In addition, he is Vice Chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Ethics. He serves as the top Republican on the Judiciary Committee's Immigration, Border Security and Refugees subcommittee and the Armed Services Committee's Airland subcommittee.
