Capito: GOP-led Earmark Reforms Bring Transparency, Accountability to Spending

Rep. Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) today reacted to the decision by House Democrats to restore congressional earmark rules that were first put into place by Republicans last fall:

"The decision to restore Republican-backed earmark reforms is a victory for taxpayers and anyone who believes there should be greater transparency and accountability in government spending. When Congress is run more openly, the public can more easily see how and when their money is spent and raise questions if they do not agree with it. These reforms help achieve that transparency and openness," Capito said.

Rep. Capito served on the House Rules Committee last year and worked closely with congressional leaders to ensure these reforms were implemented.

In an editorial over the weekend, the Charleston Daily Mail said these reforms "made it easier for the public to see" how Congress spends money and "discouraged abuses" that can happen when taxpayer money is spent behind closed doors.
