Baldwin Votes "Present" on Iran Resolution
Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin today was among a bipartisan group of eleven House Members voting "present" on a resolution concerning statements by the leader of Iran.
"This resolution contained provisions that I strongly support as well as provisions that I oppose," said Baldwin. A vote either in favor of this resolution or against it would not have reflected my views or the views of my constituents."
"I find Iranian President Ahmadinejad's statements in denial of the holocaust and advocating the destruction of Israel abhorrent. Those remarks should be condemned in the strongest possible terms," Baldwin said.
In recent months the Bush Administration, including many in the Pentagon, have actively pursued plans to take military action against Iran. We know based on previous experience that President Bush has used seemingly innocuous resolutions as a basis for asserting Congressional support for going to war in Iraq. Today's resolution calls on " Member States of the United Nations to consider measures to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons "
"I cannot vote for a resolution that would appear to condone military action against Iran," Baldwin said.
