Murphy Statement on Indictment of Congressman Jefferson

Today, Congressman Murphy issued the following statement on the federal indictment of Congressman William Jefferson of Louisiana:

"The news of Congressman Jefferson's indictment is another example of the need for comprehensive ethics reform in Congress. The American people sent us here to work on their behalf. We can't expect them to trust us to do so if we can't even crack down on corruption within the Capitol.

"Congressman Jefferson should resign his committee post, and the Ethics Committee should do what it should have done when the news of these allegations first broke; the Committee must quickly and thoroughly investigate this matter until they find the truth.

"Moving forward, I believe, more than ever, that Congress needs an independent entity that will vet, initiate, and conduct Congressional investigations."
