If it is Friday, the FDA is Announcing Bad News

Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (Conn.-3) issued the following statement regarding the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) warning about tainted toothpaste made in China.

"This is a prime example of how FDA's lack of mandatory recall authority can endanger the American people. A poisonous substance is found in toothpaste - the same substance that tainted cough syrup in Panama killing over 40 people - and instead of being able to pull the product off the shelves immediately, FDA can only issue a warning and hope for the best.

"We can ill-afford an agency whose inclination seems to be to protect the marketplace, and not the consumer. Congress must enact legislation that would grant FDA strong authority to order recalls. Anything less would continue to be dangerous and unacceptable."
