Congressman Johnson Votes to Preserve PeachCare

Congressman Hank Johnson yesterday voted to continue funding for the Georgia Peachcare program in an emergency supplemental appropriations bill. While Congressman Johnson voted in opposition to the Iraq War Emergency Spending Bill, he cast his vote in support of PeachCare in a separate measure.

Earlier on Wednesday, Congressman Johnson led an effort by the other Democratic members of the Georgia congressional delegation to preserve PeachCare and prevent any cuts to the essential program. The bill included $650 million for the elimination of shortfalls in the State Children's Health Insurance Fund.

"We faced tough opposition, both in Georgia and in congress, but this was a critical issue for the working families in the 4th District and all over Georgia. Our hard work has paid off, and this is an important step in the right direction. While I am pleased that SCHIP shortfalls are being addressed by this bill, I will continue fighting for expansion of the program," said Congressman Johnson.

Georgia is only one of 14 states expected to face an SCHIP shortfall this year. There are approximately 285,000 Georgia children enrolled in PeachCare.
