Gov. Rounds asks travelers to make travel safety a priority this holiday weekend

Gov. Mike Rounds asks those who are traveling over the Memorial Day weekend to please make travel safety a priority.

"Many of us look forward to spending the Memorial Day weekend with family and friends. While traveling the South Dakota highways, please remember to drive safe and buckle up," said Gov. Rounds. "Please use your seat belt, follow the speed limits and don't drink and drive."

As a reminder to weekend travelers, the South Dakota Highway Patrol will be on the roads in full-force.

"On Memorial Day, we respect those who have passed on before us. Unfortunately, too many continue to die on our highways. Let's all show our respect by driving safely this weekend," said Col. Dan Mosteller, South Dakota Highway Patrol.

Last year, there were 126 crashes on South Dakota roads during the Memorial Day weekend. Fifty-five people were injured in those crashes. Two people lost their lives.
